The HerFlow Foundation has been recognized with the prestigious Government of Canada Gender Equality Award 2023 for its outstanding efforts in advancing gender equality in Jamaica. The award was presented during a ceremony hosted by the Canadian High Commission, which celebrated trailblazers in gender advocacy across 10 categories.

This year, the High Commission received 50 nominations from a range of impactful organizations and initiatives. Among the notable awardees were Jamaican Women in Coffee (JAWIC), who received the BIG Impact Award for a Canada Fund for Local Initiatives project, and the Women’s Voice and Leadership Caribbean Project, which was honored for their exceptional work in Canada’s International Assistance Project.
The event concluded with the Canada-Jamaica Partnership for Gender Equality Award presented to the Bureau of Gender Affairs, underscoring the shared commitment between Jamaica and Canada in promoting gender equity.
Speaking on the importance of the awards, High Commissioner Emina Tudakovic stated, “In an increasingly interconnected world, Canada is committed to collaborating with Jamaica to enhance its capacity to promote gender equality across all sectors. We take pride in acknowledging these trailblazers of gender equality and extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the remarkable awardees here today. We eagerly anticipate the continuation of our partnership with you.”
The keynote address was delivered by Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith on behalf of Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange. In her remarks, Johnson Smith lauded the awardees, stating, “Your remarkable efforts in bridging the gender divide inspire us all. Jamaica remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing gender inequality in all areas.”
The HerFlow Foundation’s recognition reflects its tireless dedication to eradicating period poverty, promoting menstrual health education, and championing women’s rights. The Foundation’s Executive Director, Shelly-Ann Weeks, expressed her gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the significance of the recognition.
“This award is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy and the impact of collective action. At HerFlow, we believe that gender equality begins with addressing the basic needs of women and girls, and we are proud to be recognized for our work in this space. We are deeply grateful to the Government of Canada for their commitment to this cause and for shining a light on the efforts of organizations like ours. We look forward to expanding our work and building on this incredible partnership in 2024 and beyond,” said Weeks.
As the HerFlow Foundation continues its mission to empower women and girls, this award serves as a powerful reminder of the progress that can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment to equality.
